Manuel Neuer Admits His Mistake After Bundesliga's Fastest-Ever Goal
A failed clearance, a historic record, and an unexpected draw. Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer explained his decision and took responsibility after a difficult night.
“It was a silly mistake on my part. I should have positioned myself to play the ball to the left because two players came to press me on the right. I simply should have made a different decision,” admitted Manuel Neuer to Sky Sport Germany after the 2-2 draw between Bayern Munich and Augsburg on Matchday 5 of the 2026-27 Bundesliga season.
The 40-year-old German goalkeeper explained that he tried to find a way out under the opposition’s pressure but admitted that he should have made a different decision.
“First, I had to regroup, take a deep breath and, of course, I still had hope that we could turn the game around. I think we had our chances, but unfortunately, we failed to take them,” he added, reflecting on the impact of the mistake and the need to maintain hope of a comeback.
The error came just 8.37 seconds after kickoff, when Manuel Neuer attempted to beat the press with a lofted ball. However, Robin Fellhauer intercepted the clearance and scored the fastest goal in Bundesliga history.
THE SECOND GOAL ALSO SPARKED CONTROVERSY
The goalkeeper came under scrutiny again in the 64th minute. After a powerful shot from Calvin Brackelmann, Manuel Neuer parried the ball, and Rodrigo Ribeiro capitalized on the rebound to put Augsburg 2-1 ahead.
However, the Bayern Munich captain defended his performance in that situation: “There was nothing I could do about the second goal.”
He explained that the shot was difficult to hold onto and that his intention was to push the ball away toward the side, although the opposition ultimately took advantage of the rebound.
KOMPANY BACKS HIS CAPTAIN
Despite the mistakes, Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany avoided publicly blaming Manuel Neuer and stressed that the team must stick together during difficult moments. The coach acknowledged that the error could not be overlooked but highlighted the goalkeeper’s experience in handling a situation of that magnitude.
"The truth is, I was looking at the other side of the pitch when that happened (Neuer's mistake). I know what it's like for a player; these things happen. If he were a 20-year-old goalkeeper, as a coach, you'd have some work to do with him. But Manu is more or less my age, and he knows how to handle the situation," the Bayern manager said at a press conference.
Bayern fought back twice: Ismael Saibari equalized in the 55th minute, and Nathaniel Brown made it 2-2 in the 80th minute after an assist from Harry Kane.
"We always stick together as a team. The match is over, and we can't change it. The only thing that matters now is the next game," Kompany added.
BAYERN SALVAGES A POINT BUT RAISES CONCERNS
Bayern Munich dominated much of the match, created numerous scoring opportunities, and had four goals disallowed for offside. Despite their attacking efforts, the Bavarian side failed to secure a victory and dropped points away from home against Augsburg.
The draw left Bayern Munich with 11 points, behind Borussia Dortmund, who lead the standings with 13 points. For Manuel Neuer, the night was defined by a historic record no goalkeeper wants to be associated with and the need to move on as Bayern prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
