Xavi Hernández: “I don't consider myself a better player than Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Xavi Hernández speaks humbly about his legacy in soccer, his individual achievements, and his role as a playmaker in what is considered the best Barcelona team in history.
The legacy of a midfield genius
Xavi Hernández, one of the most iconic figures in FC Barcelona's history, once again demonstrated that his greatness lies not only in what he did on the field, but also in his perspective. In a recent interview, the former player spoke about his place in history, his role as a playmaker, and his perspective on legends such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I don't consider myself a better player than Messi or Cristiano. I consider myself a playmaker who makes the team play.”
“I have surpassed my dreams”
Between 2008 and 2012, Xavi came third in the Ballon d'Or three times, and also managed to come fourth and fifth in other years. But far from asking for more recognition, the former Catalan footballer was satisfied with what he achieved in his career.
“I'm proud to have won the Bronze Ball three times. I've been the best player in the world three times. I made history. That's amazing to me.”
He also recalled with emotion the legendary image alongside Andrés Iniesta and Lionel Messi on the Ballon d'Or podium:
“The photo with Iniesta and Messi is historic. We're friends, and it was incredible to be there with them. I've surpassed my dreams.”
A mind that transformed the game
Xavi was never a player known for spectacular statistics or highlights. But he was the cog that shaped the best Barcelona team in history and the most dominant Spanish national team.
“I don't have the ability to win a game on my own. What I have is the ability to build the way for the team to win it.”
His style defined an era: precision, control, vision, and collective mentality. Beyond individual awards, Xavi left an indelible mark on modern soccer.
