Wojciech Szczesny is now a free agent! What’s next for him? Will he stay at Barcelona?
A new chapter begins for one of Europe’s most experienced goalkeepers… Will he remain a Barça player, or is a new destination on the horizon?
As of this Tuesday, Wojciech Szczesny is officially a free agent. The veteran Polish goalkeeper, 34, has reached the end of his contract with FC Barcelona and is currently without a club—at least on paper. Although there’s been no official announcement, Szczesny has reportedly been in talks with Barça for weeks, sparking all kinds of rumors about a potential renewal.
The question now looms: will the Catalan club offer him a new deal, or was his time at Camp Nou just a short-term stay? Meanwhile, clubs across Europe and the Middle East are watching closely. Reports in Italy suggest AS Roma are interested in bringing him back to Serie A, while clubs in Saudi Arabia are also said to be eyeing the keeper.

Szczesny’s role at Barça
The Polish international made a strong impact upon joining Barcelona. Since his arrival in October 2024, he went on a 21-match unbeaten streak, the longest for any player debuting with the club.
He also kept 14 clean sheets in 30 appearances across all competitions and helped the team secure all available domestic titles under Hansi Flick, proving to be a key figure in the squad.
A battle for the Barça goal?
If Szczesny ends up signing a new deal, the challenge won’t be easy. Barcelona’s goal could become one of the most hotly contested positions in Europe: Marc-André ter Stegen is back fully fit and remains the favorite, while Joan García, recently signed from Espanyol, is eager to stake his claim. Adding Szczesny’s experience and leadership to the mix gives Xavi Hernández a real selection dilemma.
The internal competition could lead to a rotation policy—or even push one of the three goalkeepers toward the exit. It all hinges on how Szczesny’s situation unfolds in the coming days.
A mystery yet to be solved
For now, the Polish keeper is expected to continue enjoying his vacation until July 13, when Barça resumes training—despite not having a signed contract.
His immediate future remains unclear… but a decision appears to be just around the corner. Will he wear the blaugrana shirt next season, or is a career twist on the way? The countdown has begun.
