Will Messi Play Against Pumas? Here’s What Mascherano Said About The Argentine And His Injury In The Leagues Cup
Lionel Messi’s immediate future with Inter Miami in the 2025 Leagues Cup remains uncertain following his recent muscle injury. Ahead of the decisive clash against Pumas UNAM, the team’s head coach, Javier Mascherano, shared updates on Messi’s condition — and gave a clear answer regarding his availability.
What Did Mascherano Say About Messi’s Availability?
In a press conference, the Argentine coach was direct: “He won’t be available for tomorrow’s match.” According to Mascherano, Messi is still recovering from the discomfort that forced him off during the previous game against Necaxa. While he noted that the Rosario-born star usually recovers quickly, he made it clear that medical tests will ultimately determine his return.
“He’s a very special player who usually recovers well from injuries,” said Mascherano, leaving the door slightly open for what may come next.
What Other News Did Inter Miami Share Ahead Of The Match?
The good news for the Herons was the clearance of Maximiliano Falcón. The Uruguayan defender, who was controversially sent off against Necaxa, will now be eligible to play after the disciplinary committee overturned the red card.
“It’s good news for us. We believed it was unfair during the match, and this decision confirms it,” added Mascherano.

What’s At Stake For Inter Miami Against Pumas?
Inter Miami enters the final matchday of the group stage needing a win in regular time to guarantee a direct spot in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. Any other result would leave their fate in the hands of other group matches.
Mascherano also praised Pumas UNAM, particularly highlighting Adalberto Carrasquilla, whom he described as “one of the best” players in the tournament.
