Lionel Messi has decided to bring his time with the Argentina National Team to an end at the age of 39, following more than two decades, six World Cups and a career defined by titles, records and a major emotional toll.
The decision was not driven by a single reason. Messi himself suggested that the physical, mental and emotional wear accumulated over so many years of competition eventually played a major role. At 39, the forward felt it was the right time to close this chapter before beginning another cycle toward the 2028 Copa América or the 2030 World Cup.
Fatigue and a Decision That Had Been Building
Messi had avoided setting a specific date for his international retirement for years, although he acknowledged on several occasions that he evaluated his future tournament by tournament.
After playing all 120 minutes of the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, the Argentine confirmed that he felt he had already given everything he had to the national team. His tournament, however, once again showed that he could still make a difference, as he finished with eight goals and four assists.
That accumulated fatigue was followed by a major personal blow: the death of his father, Jorge Messi, just weeks after the final. The captain indicated that the moment reinforced a decision he had already begun considering after the conclusion of the World Cup.
Messi Also Makes Way for a New Generation
Another factor was the emergence of young players beginning to push for bigger roles with the Argentina National Team. Names such as Nico Paz and Valentín Barco represent a new era, while players including Julián Alvarez, Enzo Fernández, Cristian Romero and Alexis Mac Allister have already established themselves as key figures.
Messi leaves the senior national team after 207 appearances and 125 goals, finishing as Argentina's all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.
He also won four major titles: the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the 2024 Copa América.
