Who Is “Hormiga” González? The Young Chivas Forward Learning From Chicharito and Pushing for a Mexico Call-Up
A rising striker at Chivas guided by Javier “Chicharito” Hernández is making noise in Liga MX and earning national team attention.
A Record-Breaking Start in the Apertura 2025
At just 22 years old, Armando “Hormiga” González has become one of the breakout stars in Mexican football. The Chivas forward is not only a guaranteed starter under Gabriel Milito, but he also leads the Apertura 2025 scoring chart with 11 goals — tied with João Pedro of Atlético de San Luis and Paulinho of Toluca.
His latest strike against Pachuca allowed him to match a historic club milestone previously held by Chicharito Hernández: the most goals by a Mexican U-23 player in a short season (11). That record had stood since Apertura 2009 and now “Hormiga” has a chance to break it in the upcoming match at the Estadio Akron against Monterrey.
It would be the perfect stage to solidify his rapid rise.
Chicharito’s New Role as a Mentor
Despite not having the expected on-field impact since returning to Chivas, Chicharito Hernández has become a key figure behind González’s development. Video clips of the veteran striker advising the young goal-getter have gone viral, illustrating their growing bond.
Head coach Gabriel Milito publicly praised that influence:
“There’s no better reference for ‘Hormiga’ than Javier Hernández. In that position, he can teach him far more than I ever could. Even when he’s not playing, he contributes a lot — and that has tremendous value inside the group.”
Their mentor-student relationship dates back to last season, when Chicharito was one of the first to support González through a significant injury setback.
A New Star for Mexican Football?
The emergence of Armando González has sparked calls for him to be considered by the Mexican national team in the near future. His finishing ability, maturity and personality have quickly positioned him as one of the Liga MX’s most exciting homegrown talents.
If Chivas want him to reach the global stage, they may need to follow the same path they once built for Chicharito — guiding a young striker from Guadalajara toward international stardom.
His story is just beginning, but one thing is already clear: “Hormiga” González is the next big name powering the attack of Chivas — and possibly soon, El Tri.
