When Is the Next FIFA International Break and Why Is It Longer Than Usual?
The next men's international window will run from September 21 through October 6, 2026. The 16-day break will allow national teams to play up to four matches following a major change to FIFA's international calendar.
The extended break is not a one-off measure created because of the World Cup. It is part of FIFA's Men's International Match Calendar for 2025-2030, approved by the FIFA Council in March 2023. Beginning in 2026, the traditional separate windows in September and October were replaced by one combined period in late September and early October.
Why does the FIFA window last 16 days?
Through 2025, September and October each contained a nine-day window in which teams could play up to two matches. From 2026 onward, FIFA concentrates those two breaks into one 16-day period with room for four games.
The total potential number of matches therefore does not increase compared with the old system: teams could previously play four games across the two separate windows. The main difference is that players now leave their clubs once for a longer spell rather than twice in successive months.
FIFA has established the change as part of the international calendar through 2030, meaning the extended September-October period is designed to become a regular feature rather than an exception for 2026.
What matches will be played during the window?
The schedule depends on each confederation. In Europe, the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League will use the extended period for its first four matchdays: September 24-26, September 27-29, September 30-October 3 and October 4-6.
In Concacaf, the Nations League group stage is also scheduled within the September 21-October 6 period. In Africa, the opening rounds of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will take place during the same FIFA window.
For South American national teams, there are no World Cup qualifying matches during this window. Brazil, for example, has already confirmed three friendlies: two against Australia and one against India between September 21 and October 6.
When is the following FIFA international break?
Once the extended window ends on October 6, the next men's international period is scheduled for November 9-17, 2026. That break returns to the standard nine-day format and allows for up to two matches.
The September-October pause will therefore be unusually long for club competitions, but it is not temporary. It is FIFA's new model for combining what used to be two separate international breaks into one extended window.
