The tension between FIFA and UEFA continues to escalate over the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project. The organization led by Gianni Infantino has responded to UEFA’s legal actions, accusing European soccer’s governing body of carrying out a “smear campaign” against its president and FIFA itself.
FIFA QUESTIONS UEFA’S LEGAL ACTIONS
The dispute began after details emerged about FIFA Forward Enterprise, an initiative that envisioned private investors becoming involved in the future commercial rights of FIFA.
The proposal included an investment of around $4.2 billion, but it faced opposition within the international soccer community. FIFA ultimately withdrew the project on August 1.
UEFA subsequently filed documents with a U.S. court seeking information related to the initiative. The goal is to obtain details about the project’s structure and negotiations with potential investors.
FIFA’s response was forceful. In its court filing, the organization described UEFA’s actions as “little more than a smear campaign against FIFA and its leadership.”
INFANTINO AT THE CENTER OF THE CONTROVERSY
The case has once again placed Gianni Infantino under the spotlight. UEFA is considering possible legal action in Switzerland while seeking documentation related to the project.
Among the individuals and companies linked to the initiative is Josh Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital, a fund that had been considered as a potential investor. JPMorgan and BANN Ventures were also mentioned in connection with the proposal.
FIFA has challenged UEFA’s request for documents, arguing that the European governing body is seeking information to support a criminal proceeding that does not yet exist.
The organization also criticized UEFA’s decision to make the dispute public, arguing that statements from the European body have contributed to damaging Infantino’s reputation.
FIFA POINTS TO ECONOMIC INTERESTS
FIFA’s response went beyond defending its president. The organization accused UEFA of having an economic motivation for opposing the project.
According to FIFA, greater investment in less-resourced national associations would help develop soccer outside Europe and increase international competition. In its view, that could reduce part of the economic advantage enjoyed by Europe’s biggest soccer powers.
For now, FIFA Forward Enterprise is off the table, but the dispute continues in the legal arena. UEFA is keeping its options open, while FIFA is seeking to prevent access to the requested documents.
