What Injury Does Messi Have? Here's What We Know
The Argentine superstar raised concerns after being forced off the field against Necaxa in the Leagues Cup. Head coach Javier Mascherano provided early details on the muscular discomfort suffered by Inter Miami’s number 10.
Lionel Messi was only able to play 11 minutes in the match between Inter Miami and Necaxa in the Leagues Cup before being substituted due to a possible hamstring injury. According to head coach Javier Mascherano, the issue appears minor, although medical exams are still pending to confirm the extent of the damage.
“Leo felt some discomfort in his hamstring. We won’t know the severity of the injury until tomorrow,” stated the coach at a press conference. “It might not be too serious because he wasn’t in pain, but he definitely felt something.”
Redondo replaces Messi as Inter Miami salvages a draw
Despite concerns over Messi, Inter Miami managed a 2-2 draw thanks to a last-minute goal from Jordi Alba in the 92nd minute and secured the bonus point in penalties (5-4). Federico Redondo came on to replace Messi, who walked off the pitch on his own after lying down due to discomfort.
The injury occurred after a central run through the opposing defense, during which Messi appeared to strain a muscle and immediately signaled to be subbed off. This setback came after the Argentine had delivered two assists in the opening match of the tournament, a 2-1 win over Atlas.
Messi emphasizes the importance of consistent playing time
Earlier, Messi had voiced concerns about his physical condition following his absence from the July 26 match against Cincinnati, due to a suspension linked to his withdrawal from the MLS All-Star Game.
“At first I felt a bit heavy. I had been playing consistently, but not being allowed to play the other day really affected me, especially in the first half,” said the world champion.
“Not playing may seem like a good thing on paper, but for me it’s worse because I need to compete. I feel better physically as I get into rhythm by playing matches,” he added.
Inter Miami has faced a demanding schedule recently, with nine matches in just 35 days, including a stretch of five games in 15 days.
