Uganda Footballer Dies at 27 Following Deadly Attack
Ugandan football is in mourning. David Owori, captain of SC Villa and a Uganda international, has died at the age of 27 after being the victim of a violent attack in the country's capital.
Football in Uganda has been shaken by the tragic death of David Owori, captain of SC Villa and a member of the national team, who passed away at the age of 27 after being attacked by unidentified assailants in Kampala.
The news was confirmed by SC Villa, which released an official statement expressing its deep sorrow over the loss of one of the club's most influential figures on and off the pitch. The club also pledged its support to Owori's family and promised to ensure he receives a dignified farewell.
A Leader On and Off the Pitch
According to information released by the club, David Owori was attacked near his home on Tuesday night and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a medical center in Kampala, where he later died as a result of his wounds.
SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said the midfielder was the victim of an ambush and called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) also paid tribute to the midfielder, highlighting not only his talent on the field but also the leadership and inspiration he provided to the next generation of Ugandan footballers.
The Tragedy Sparks Outrage Across Uganda
The death of David Owori has generated an emotional response throughout Uganda. Thousands of fans took to social media to express their grief while demanding stronger security measures in response to rising violence in the streets of Kampala.
The Parliament of Uganda also honored the footballer with a moment of silence. In addition, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa called for a comprehensive investigation into the attack and urged the government to strengthen public safety measures to better protect Ugandan citizens.
Before returning to SC Villa in 2023, Owori spent time in European football, playing for Vélez CF in Spain and Utsiktens BK in Sweden.
His death comes just weeks after the killing of Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, another tragedy that shocked the country's sporting community. In response, the National Council of Sports of Uganda called for justice and urged authorities to implement long-term solutions to address the wave of violence affecting both sports and society in the country.
