Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Putellas to leave Barcelona
Alexia Putellas will bring the curtain down on her glittering Barcelona career at the end of the season, the club confirmed on Tuesday.
Alexia Putellas has announced that her trophy-laden 14-year stint with Barcelona will come to an end once her contract expires at the end of the season.
Putellas, who has won 38 honours with Barcelona, confirmed the news on Tuesday, with reports suggesting she could be on her way to the Women's Super League.
The 32-year-old has already been linked with a switch to the London City Lionesses, while a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain has also been mooted.
Putellas signed for the Blaugrana from Levante in 2012 and has been a key part of the club's success ever since, and she leaves Barcelona on a high after helping them win the Women's Champions League, which completed a second quadruple in three seasons.
The Spaniard has made 507 appearances in all competitions for the club, second to only Melanie Serrano (516), while her 232 goals is the most for the women's team.
Across both men's and women's sides, only Lionel Messi (672) has netted more for Barcelona.
She also became the first female Barcelona player to win the Ballon d'Or, and won it twice, in 2021 and 2022. In both years, she was also named The Best FIFA Women's Player.
"The time has come to acknowledge that I've given everything for these colours," Putellas said in a video posted on her social media accounts. "It's been a perfect story."
Putellas confirmed that Barcelona's Liga F game against Real Sociedad on Wednesday will be her last for the club, and she will be hoping to bow out with a victory.
There was an option in her contract to extend her stay with Barcelona by an additional year, with the club open to her continuing, but she has opted to pursue a new challenge.
"We've taken the women's team further than we ever imagined," Putellas added.
"At the beginning, being a soccer player wasn't even recognised as a profession. Now I feel privileged to have been part of this change."
It looks set to be a summer of change at Barcelona, with Mapi Leon and Ona Batlle set to join London City and Arsenal, respectively, when their deals expire next month.
Marta Torrejon is also likely to exit as her contract comes to an end, while Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo must agree new deals if they wish to stay.
