Two-Time Ballon d’Or Winner Alexia Putellas Announces Departure From Barcelona
The historic era of Alexia Putellas at Barcelona is coming to an end. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner has decided to close a 14-year chapter with the Blaugrana club to begin a new adventure outside of Spain.
European women’s football is preparing to say goodbye to one of the greatest legends in the history of Barcelona. After 14 seasons wearing the Blaugrana shirt, Alexia Putellas has decided to bring her time at the club to an end, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential players of her generation.
Although the official announcement has not yet been made, everything points toward the Spanish midfielder continuing her career in England with London City Lionesses, a club owned by businesswoman Michele Kang that is aiming to become one of the rising powers in the Women’s Super League.
The possibility of Alexia’s departure had been growing for months. Last summer, she reportedly received major offers from across Europe, including interest from Paris Saint-Germain. In the end, the midfielder chose not to activate the clause that would have automatically extended her contract with Barcelona for another season.
The End of an Era at Barcelona
The departure of Alexia Putellas represents far more than just a sporting loss for the Catalan side. Beyond remaining a decisive player on the pitch, the Spanish star had become one of the locker room’s biggest leaders and a key role model for the younger generation at the club.
This season, Alexia once again showcased her world-class quality by scoring 20 goals and being named the best player of the Champions League campaign won by Barcelona.
Her legacy at the club is historic. Since arriving from Levante in 2012, the midfielder became one of the pillars behind the rise of Barcelona Women into a global powerhouse.
Her numbers also secured a permanent place in club history. With 232 goals, Alexia leaves as the second-highest scorer in Barcelona history, trailing only Lionel Messi.
A Player Who Changed Women’s Football in Spain
Beyond trophies and statistics, Alexia Putellas became a symbol of the growth of women’s football in Spain. She was also one of the leading voices behind the #SEACABÓ movement following the controversy involving Luis Rubiales and Jennifer Hermoso, further establishing herself as an influential figure beyond football.
Her list of achievements is extraordinary: ten league titles, ten Copa de la Reina trophies, six Spanish Super Cups, and four Champions League titles with Barcelona, in addition to a World Cup and a UEFA Nations League title with Spain.
Now, at 32 years old, “The Queen” appears ready to begin a new chapter in England, leaving behind an unforgettable era in women’s football history.
