A qualification marked by more than just the result

Santos secured their place in the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals after defeating Clube do Remo 1-0 in the second leg of their round-of-16 tie.

The match in Belém ended with celebrations for the São Paulo-based side, but the sporting result quickly took a back seat due to the incidents involving Remo supporters and Neymar after the final whistle.

The provocations began in the stands

At different moments during the match, a section of the home crowd directed chants and insults at Neymar.

The Brazilian decided to respond as he left the pitch and headed toward the dressing rooms. The player blew kisses toward the stands and exchanged words with the supporters who continued to boo him.

The situation became even more tense upon reaching the stadium tunnel, where fans were already waiting for the Santos players after the match.

The tunnel became the scene of the conflict

Footage released after the match showed Neymar verbally confronting members of Remo.

The forward began making gestures and dancing in front of members of the home side in response to the provocations he had received throughout the night and while leaving the pitch.

There were also complaints, animated gestures and taunts directed at the player from the Remo section. Security barriers separated both sides and prevented the verbal confrontation from turning physical.

The tension continued outside the stadium

The conflict did not end inside the tunnel. Dozens of Remo supporters waited for the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player to leave before insulting him again as he drove away from the stadium.

Santos’ qualification was therefore overshadowed by a scene that quickly began circulating on social media and once again placed Neymar’s behavior off the pitch at the center of the conversation.
