The Million-Euro Bonus Saudi Players Receive for Qualifying for the World Cup
Football in Saudi Arabia is lived with a special kind of intensity, and qualifying for the 2026 World Cup was celebrated as a true national achievement. After securing their ticket to the tournament to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Saudi players received a large financial reward in recognition of their effort and commitment to the national team.
Gold for a World Cup ticket
The goalless draw against Iraq in Jeddah was enough for the team led by French coach Hervé Renard to secure its sixth World Cup appearance — and third in a row. While the match itself wasn’t spectacular, the reward certainly was: each player received 5 million Saudi riyals, equivalent to 1.15 million euros, according to the financial outlet Asharq Business.
Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, the kingdom’s Minister of Sports, personally authorized the generous bonus. The qualification was celebrated in grand fashion, with players and coaching staff treated as national heroes. And understandably so: after an uneven spell under Roberto Mancini, the return of Renard revitalized the Green Falcons, who regrouped and sealed their place in the world’s most prestigious tournament.
A story of steady growth
The Saudi national team continues to write its story among football’s elite. Since their memorable debut in USA 1994, where they reached the Round of 16, Saudi Arabia has sought to cement its presence at the World Cup. In Qatar 2022, they delivered one of the greatest shocks in recent history by defeating reigning champions Argentina 2–1 in their opening match.
With this new achievement, the country secures its third consecutive World Cup appearance and prepares to keep growing on the global stage. Although their attacking play still lacks greater sharpness, the defensive solidity and team mentality shown against Iraq are encouraging signs.
Meanwhile, Iraq will have to fight for its place through the intercontinental playoff against the United Arab Emirates, while the Saudis enjoy their well-deserved reward. In Saudi Arabia, qualifying is not just a matter of national pride — it’s also a celebration of hard work, discipline, and faith in a project that continues to gain ground in world football.
