Rafa Márquez takes charge of the Mexico National Team
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has officially appointed Rafael Márquez as the new head coach of the Mexico National Team, marking the beginning of a new era following El Tri's elimination in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The legendary former defender replaces Javier Aguirre, who concluded his third spell in charge of the national team after the defeat to England. Márquez's appointment is part of the 2030 Sporting Project, a long-term plan that had already envisioned him taking over the national team once the 2026 World Cup came to an end.
From legendary captain to national team head coach
Few players know the Mexico National Team as well as Rafael Márquez. Nicknamed the "Kaiser of Michoacán," he played in five FIFA World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018), captained El Tri through multiple tournaments, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in Mexican history.
His playing career was also defined by his successful spell with FC Barcelona, where he won numerous domestic and international titles, including the UEFA Champions League, cementing his status as one of the most accomplished Mexican players of all time.
Now, he will look to bring that experience to the national team dugout as he aims to develop the next generation of Mexican talent.
Rafa Márquez's coaching experience
Although this will be his first experience as head coach of a senior national team, Márquez arrives well prepared for the role.
After retiring as a player, he began his coaching career within FC Barcelona's youth system, taking charge of Barça Atlètic, where he developed young prospects while gaining valuable experience in one of football's most demanding environments.
He later left the Catalan club to join Javier Aguirre's coaching staff as an assistant with the Mexico National Team, playing an active role throughout the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup before taking over as head coach.
The major challenge on the road to the 2030 World Cup
Rafa Márquez's primary objective will be to build on the progress Mexico showed during the 2026 FIFA World Cup while assembling a competitive squad capable of challenging at the next edition of the tournament.
Among his biggest challenges will be the Concacaf Gold Cup, the Concacaf Nations League, potential appearances in future international competitions, and, of course, preparing Mexico for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
A new era for Mexican football
Rafa Márquez's appointment represents one of the most significant changes for the Mexico National Team in recent years. After becoming one of the country's greatest icons on the pitch, the former captain will now carry the responsibility of leading El Tri from the sidelines in a project designed to restore Mexico's status on the international stage.
Fans will hope that one of the greatest figures in Mexican football can write another golden chapter in his remarkable career—this time as head coach of the national team.
