Rúben Neves Tattoos Diogo Jota and Moves All of Portugal
The first training camp of the Portugal national team after the tragic death of Diogo Jota was marked by a gesture that touched the entire country. Al-Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves showed up to training with a striking tattoo on his left leg, depicting an image of himself embracing the late forward, accompanied by the phrase: “You will never be forgotten. We are 23+1.”
A tribute built on shared history
For Neves, the loss of Jota was not only that of a teammate but of a true brother in football. Together they shared 164 matches throughout their careers: from their beginnings at Porto, through memorable campaigns at Wolverhampton, to their time wearing the Portuguese national team jersey.
In a video released by the Portuguese Football Federation, Neves spoke about the bond that remains unbroken: “More than friendship, we are family. When we’re at the table, in the locker room, or on the plane, you will still be with us.”
Portugal does not forget its heroes
The tribute to Diogo Jota and former Porto captain Jorge Costa brought together figures from across the nation. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and icons such as Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix led the ceremony, honoring the indelible mark left by both players.

During the event, Neves also announced that he would wear the number 21, Jota’s shirt number, as a way of keeping his memory alive on the field: “It’s the way I found to always carry him with me.”
An eternal legacy
The Portuguese Federation will inaugurate the Plaza of Heroes at FPF headquarters, a space dedicated to those who shaped Portuguese football. Both Jota and Costa will posthumously receive the Medal of Sporting Merit and the title of Commanders of the Order of Merit.
The image of Rúben Neves’ tattoo has gone viral on social media, becoming a symbol of the national team’s unity. Beyond the tragedy, Portugal made it clear that the memory of Diogo Jota will remain present in every match on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
