Paderborn 2-1 Wolfsburg (2-1 agg, aet): Curda punishes Maehle red as Bundesliga stalwarts relegated
Having been Bundesliga ever-presents since 1997, Wolfsburg will spend 2026-27 in the 2. Bundesliga, having lost a play-off to Paderborn.
Wolfsburg dropped out of the Bundesliga with Paderborn taking their place after a 2-1 extra-time victory in the second leg of their promotion/relegation play-off on Monday.
Following a goalless draw in Thursday's first leg, it was all to play for at Home Deluxe Arena, but Joakim Maehle's red card rocked Wolfsburg after they had taken an early lead.
Filip Bilbija equalised for Paderborn, who laid siege to the Wolfsburg area for long periods and finally got the all-important goal in the 100th minute, with captain Laurin Curda pouncing to end their six-year exile from the Bundesliga.
Wolfsburg could hardly have asked for a better start as, inside three minutes, Dzenan Pejcinovic applied a first-time finish to Adam Daghim's left-wing cutback.
But, having finished the first leg with a numerical advantage after Paderborn had Jonah Sticker dismissed, Wolfsburg saw their position threatened by a red card of their own.
Only three minutes after receiving the game's first caution, Maehle lunged in high on Mattes Hansen in the 14th minute and Felix Zwayer produced a second yellow.
Paderborn did not immediately take advantage, but their equaliser arrived in the 38th minute as Curda's long throw was flicked on by Calvin Brackelmann, with Bilbija flinging himself at the ball to convert at the far post.
Stefano Marino went close on two occasions and Sebastian Klaas' deflected strike clanged off the woodwork as Paderborn dominated the second half, but despite attempting 19 shots to Wolfsburg's one, the hosts could not prevent extra time.
However, their goal came 10 minutes into the first additional period, with Curda arriving at the far post to steer Sven Michel's deep delivery across Kamil Grabara.
Wolfsburg had two big chances through Kento Shiogai late on, but Dennis Seimen was equal to both of his headers as the visitors ran out of time.
Data Debrief: Wolfsburg's 29-year stay over as David slays Goliath
The last time Wolfsburg played outside the Bundesliga was in 1996-97, when they won promotion from the second tier, and they have been a fixture at the top table of German football ever since, never suffering relegation from that level in their history – until now.
They will be absent from the Bundesliga next season, with Maehle's three minutes of madness costing a team that boasts plenty of star power in Christian Eriksen, Vinicius Souza, Jesper Lindstrom and others.
By the end of 120 minutes, Paderborn had attempted an eye-watering 39 shots to Wolfsburg's eight, also racking up 3.86 expected goals (xG) to the visitors' 0.44.
This is only the second time in the last 14 editions of the play-off that the second-tier side has prevailed, ending a run of six straight victories for the top-tier team.
