Nigeria Starts Strong With Dominant Win at WAFCON 2025
Nigeria showed no mercy in their opening match at the 2025 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), defeating Tunisia 3-0 in Casablanca. The nine-time champions made it clear they're aiming for a tenth title with a commanding performance from start to finish.
Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a powerful header from a free-kick delivered by Rinsola Babajide, who was the standout player of the match. Before halftime, Babajide doubled the lead with an impressive solo effort inside the box. Late in the second half, substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo sealed the win with a third goal.
Nigeria controlled the match with 71% possession, 9 shots on target, and didn’t allow Tunisia a single clear chance. Despite their progress in recent years—including a quarterfinal run in 2022—Tunisia struggled to match Nigeria’s pace, physicality, and individual quality.
With this win, Nigeria takes the lead in Group B and solidifies their status as tournament favorites. Next up, they face Algeria, while Tunisia will need a strong response against Botswana to keep their hopes alive.
