Neymar Redeems Himself With a Brace for Santos and Puts Pressure on Brazil’s Squad Selection
With two goals and a brilliant performance, Santos' number 10 sends a message to Ancelotti. But is it enough to return to the national team?
Neymar Jr. delivered his best performance since returning to Santos, scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Juventude in the Brasileirão. The victory helped Pelé’s former club momentarily escape the relegation zone, but it also served as a perfect showcase: seated in the stands were Brazil national team scouts, sent by Carlo Ancelotti to closely monitor the former Barcelona star.
Executive coordinator Rodrigo Caetano, technical director Juan, and fitness coach Cristiano Nunes witnessed Neymar’s show at the Morumbis Stadium in São Paulo. Beyond the goals — one from the penalty spot and another from a rebound in the box — the Brazilian was involved in all three goals, provided assists, threatened on set pieces, and showed a physical level not seen in months.
His best game since returning to Brazil
The former Barça and PSG forward now has six goals this season, three of them in the Brazilian league. It was his first brace since returning and the first time he's played a consistent run of matches without injury setbacks.

From the start, Neymar looked sharp. In the 7th minute, he won a dangerous free kick and almost scored directly. In the 34th minute, he set up Argentine striker Álvaro Barreal, who came close to scoring. Two minutes later, after a save from the goalkeeper, Neymar pounced on the rebound to open the scoring. He later sealed the 3-1 win with a perfectly taken penalty.
But he still falls into provocation
Not everything was positive. Neymar once again showed his impulsive side, receiving a yellow card after arguing with opponents — an attitude that may not sit well with Ancelotti, who is looking for stability in Brazil’s new generation ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Brazil is already qualified, but the matches against Chile (September 4) and Bolivia (September 9) will be key for the Italian coach’s plans. And while others fight for a spot, Neymar rises as a contender... with brilliance and flaws.
