Neymar Loses With Santos and Explodes After Being Substituted
Neymar experienced another difficult night with Santos after suffering a painful defeat against Coritiba, in a match where he lost his temper with the referees following a confusing substitution incident that sparked his frustration in front of the cameras.
The Brazilian side was crushed 0-3 at home during Matchday 16 of the Brasileirao, increasing the pressure on the team managed by Cuca, which remains dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Beyond the defeat, the match produced a moment that quickly went viral: Neymar’s angry reaction toward the fourth official after his number was mistakenly shown on the substitution board.
The incident happened while the Brazilian forward was receiving medical attention for discomfort in his calf. Although Santos’ coaching staff had officially informed the referees that Argentine defender Gonzalo Escobar was supposed to be substituted, the fourth official accidentally displayed Neymar’s No. 10 instead.
Neymar Explodes at the Referees
As soon as he realized what happened, Neymar immediately ran toward the fourth official in visible frustration. He even grabbed the document where the club had submitted the correct substitution request and angrily showed it to television cameras.
The forward continued protesting after play resumed and was eventually booked by the referee because of his repeated complaints.
The moment perfectly reflected the frustration of the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star, who continues dealing with difficult weeks both physically and emotionally since returning to Brazilian football.
The situation comes just one day before Carlo Ancelotti announces Brazil’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, creating even more uncertainty regarding Neymar’s place in the roster.
Santos Continues Its Crisis
On the field, things were equally disastrous for the historic Brazilian club. Coritiba practically secured the victory during the first half thanks to a brace from Breno Lopes and a penalty goal scored by Portuguese midfielder Josué.
To make matters worse, Santos finished the match with ten players after Argentine winger Álvaro Barreal received a red card in the second half.
At the final whistle, frustrated fans booed the team while Neymar headed directly to the locker room without speaking to the media.
With another defeat added to the season, Cuca’s Santos remains dangerously close to the relegation places, increasing concerns around one of Brazil’s most historic clubs at a moment when all eyes remain focused on Neymar’s future with the national team.
