Newcastle United officially confirmed that Eddie Howe has stepped down as first-team manager after nearly five years in charge of the club.

The institution accepted the English coach’s decision and thanked him for his “extraordinary contribution” during a period in which he transformed the Magpies’ sporting fortunes and delivered some of the most important moments in their recent history.

The manager said he gave his “life, heart and soul” to the project during his time at St. James’ Park, but felt that stepping away, recharging and taking a break was the best decision for both himself and Newcastle.

“It has been incredibly difficult to make this decision, but I know in my heart that it is the right one,” the coach said in his farewell message.

Howe also emphasized that he always tried to put Newcastle’s interests ahead of his own and described the opportunity to manage the team as “the privilege of his life.”

Howe’s departure will also be accompanied by the exit of several members of his backroom staff.

Coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone will also leave Newcastle, along with head of performance Dan Hodges.

Chief executive David Hopkinson said Howe and his staff depart with the gratitude and respect of the entire institution, as well as a permanent place in the club’s history.

The departure comes just weeks before the start of a new Premier League season and forces Newcastle to accelerate its search for a new manager.

The club said the process of appointing its next head coach is at an advanced stage and that further updates will be announced soon.

As Newcastle begins to build a new chapter, Howe said he remains positive about the institution’s future and expressed confidence that the project will continue competing for further success.
