Memphis Depay Evicted? Corinthians Tries to Cut Costs at the Expense of Its Star
Corinthians is going through one of its most severe financial crises in recent years, and the first casualty could be none other than Memphis Depay. The Brazilian club, suffocated by massive debt, has reportedly asked the Dutch forward to leave the luxury hotel suite where he has been living since his arrival in São Paulo.
The issue is no small one: the room costs around €40,000 per month, with the club covering all associated expenses. According to Brazilian media reports, the club now considers it unsustainable to keep paying for a suite that includes 24-hour room service, personalized cleaning, a private chef, security escort, and a chauffeured car.
The former FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid player, however, is reportedly unwilling to give up those privileges, as they are part of the agreement he signed upon joining the club. His contract, valued at €11 million per year, includes several additional benefits that could push the total figure up to €19 million, depending on bonuses and performance clauses.
A Luxury Corinthians Can No Longer Afford
The so-called “eviction” request highlights the depth of Corinthians’ financial woes. The Brazilian giants, one of South America’s most storied clubs, have struggled in recent months to pay wages and sustain their roster. The board believes that the expense of Depay’s suite is an extravagance incompatible with the club’s current reality.
Local sources say club officials are attempting to negotiate a “friendly” solution, suggesting that the player move to a more modest residence or cover part of the costs himself. However, the Dutchman’s response has been firm: he has no intention of altering the signed agreement, arguing that the contract was approved by the club itself and must be honored.
The issue has sparked debate among fans in São Paulo. Some believe Depay is within his rights to maintain the agreed conditions, while others think he should show empathy for the club’s crisis and accept the change as a gesture of commitment.
Depay’s Future in Brazil Up in the Air
Although Memphis Depay has shown his quality on the pitch, his off-field adaptation has proven more complicated. The Dutch striker has become one of the highest-paid players in South America, a status that starkly contrasts with Corinthians’ fragile financial situation.
For now, the club remains firm in its stance: cut expenses or restructure contracts. But while negotiations continue, Depay remains in his luxurious suite in downtown São Paulo—a privilege that could soon become the most visible symbol of the financial tension threatening one of Brazil’s football giants.
