Mateo Silvetti, Messi’s “Protégé” Shining for Argentina at the U20 World Cup
Argentina’s U20 World Cup dream remains alive — and it has a new hero: Mateo Silvetti. The Inter Miami forward and teammate of Lionel Messi became the star of the semifinal against Colombia, scoring the only goal of the match to send Diego Placente’s side to the U20 World Cup Final in Chile.
The Goal That Sent Argentina to the Final
Silvetti entered in the second half for Ian Subiabre and immediately changed the rhythm of Argentina’s attack. Energetic, sharp, and hungry for goal, the 18-year-old striker made the difference when it mattered most.
In the 71st minute, Gianluca Prestianni burst down the right wing and delivered a perfect assist for Silvetti, who finished elegantly with the outside of his foot. The strike sealed a 1-0 win and Argentina’s ticket to the final, where they’ll face Morocco, who knocked out France on penalties.
Who Is Mateo Silvetti?
A product of Newell’s Old Boys, Silvetti made 37 senior appearances before moving to Inter Miami, where he shares the locker room — and a special bond — with Lionel Messi. The youngster has featured in three MLS matches in 2025, adapting gradually to life in the United States.
That connection with Messi has been evident since day one. During a league match, the Argentine captain even allowed Silvetti to take a penalty — a gesture of trust that spoke volumes.
For Argentina’s U20s, Silvetti had already stood out with goals against Nigeria and Mexico, as well as in the pre-tournament friendlies. His performances in Chile have made him one of the brightest young talents in South American football.

Silvetti’s Reaction After the Semifinal
Following the win, Silvetti couldn’t hide his emotion:
“This group fought for it — we deserve it. It’s not an easy tournament, but we knew how to handle every match. Now it’s time to enjoy this and focus on the final.”
Even Lionel Messi celebrated his young teammate’s moment on social media, posting:
“Congratulations boys on reaching the final! And congrats, Toto Silvetti, for the goal!”
Argentina will now face Morocco in the U20 World Cup Final this Sunday at 8:00 p.m. (local time) at Estadio Nacional de Santiago. For Silvetti — Messi’s “protégé” — it’s a golden opportunity to cap off a dream tournament and prove that the future of Argentine football is in safe hands.
