Martín Palermo, the Eternal Goalscorer: Shining in an Amateur League and Reliving Old Glories
Although his professional playing career ended years ago, Martín Palermo continues to prove that his goalscoring instinct is very much alive. This time, the "Titán" stole the spotlight at an amateur 50+ tournament held in Pilar, where he thrilled fans once again with a stunning volley that quickly went viral on social media.
The former Boca Juniors and Estudiantes de La Plata striker joined the team “La 73 Fútbol y Amigos,” a regular participant in local "Mundialitos" (mini world cup-style tournaments) across Buenos Aires Province. Alongside old friends like Gastón “Gato” Sessa in goal and Gastón Mendoza, his usual fitness coach, Palermo wore the number 7 jersey, the same number he used early in his professional career.
Legendary Martín Palermo keeps dazzling: now in an amateur league
From the beginning, the atmosphere was festive. Organizers presented Palermo with a traditional mate as a welcome gift before the match against Forrajería El Cholo. True to form, Palermo made his presence felt early on. He first attempted a high volley, then tried an overhead kick that, despite missing the goal, drew cheers from the crowd. Later, a powerful shot tested the opposing goalkeeper.
The breakthrough came after Palermo earned a penalty by drawing a foul inside the box. Though he didn't take the spot kick himself, his play was instrumental in opening the scoring. But the highlight came in the second half: playing as a classic playmaker, Palermo found space in the area and, with his favored left foot, scored a brilliant cross-body goal that left the keeper helpless. A goal worthy of his prime years.

At 51, Palermo continues to show his deep connection to the game. Even after being subbed off, he stayed active from the sidelines, directing his teammates like a true coach. That’s no surprise—his last job was managing Olimpia in Paraguay, and while he waits for a new opportunity on the bench, he keeps close to the pitch whenever he can.
With past coaching stints at clubs like Godoy Cruz, Arsenal, Aldosivi, Platense, and international sides like Pachuca and Curicó Unido, Palermo remains a strong presence in football. Whether on the touchline or in a grassroots match, his influence continues to excite those who once cheered him on.
The “Loco” is still a legend... even in neighborhood tournaments.
