Manuel Neuer Considers Retirement… and Bayern Responds With an Unexpected Offer
The future of Manuel Neuer is once again a major talking point in Germany. While the legendary goalkeeper is seriously considering retiring at the end of the season, Bayern Munich has already taken a clear stance: offering him a one-year contract extension that would keep the Bavarian captain at the Allianz Arena until June 2027. The proposal, reported by German media, aims to secure the continuity of a figure who, even at nearly 40, remains a competitive pillar.
Despite the mistake that cost Bayern a 2-2 draw against Union Berlin, ending a 16-game winning streak, manager Vincent Kompany maintains full confidence in the German. Neuer has played in 14 of Bayern’s 17 matches this season and continues to perform at a level many goalkeepers in their prime would envy. Still, the uncertainty around his retirement remains: the keeper plans to take the winter break to decide.
A Veteran Still Delivering and a Bayern Determined to Keep Him
Internally, Bayern is delighted with the professionalism of the 2014 World Cup champion. His daily routines are borderline obsessive: constant physiotherapy, strength work before every team session and additional double workouts in the gym each week. For the club, that level of discipline is proof that he still has fuel left to compete at the highest standard.
Even so, Neuer remains cautious. “I’m calm. The team comes first, and then we’ll see,” he said ahead of a Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain. He made it clear that his decision will hinge on three factors: health, motivation and the sporting project Bayern builds for next season.
Meanwhile, the club is at ease with the development of young Jonas Urbig, considered Neuer’s natural successor. The 22-year-old has embraced his backup role with maturity and puts no pressure on the veteran. “I learn every day from Manu and Sven Ulreich. The relationship is excellent,” he recently said.
A National Team Return? The Factor That Could Delay His Farewell
Another element that could influence Neuer’s final decision is the possibility of returning to the German national team, which he stepped away from after the last cycle. The DFB, still uncertain about Marc-André ter Stegen, is reportedly trying to convince Julian Nagelsmann to reopen the door for the legendary goalkeeper. Even sporting director Rudi Völler has reportedly reached out to Neuer to gauge his willingness.

If Neuer decides to extend his career, Bayern want to be the ones accompanying him through his final chapter. And if he chooses to hang up his gloves, it will be after defending his goal as an undisputed icon. For now, the ball is in his hands… literally and figuratively.
