Lionel Messi’s Absence From the Tigres Match Explained, and When He Might Return
Inter Miami had to leave Lionel Messi out of the Leagues Cup quarterfinal match against Tigres. Javier Morales, Mascherano's assistant, revealed the reasons behind this decision and the possible return of the Argentine player.
Messi wasn't 100% and they decided not to take any risks
Lionel Messi was not called up for Inter Miami's match against Tigres, where the team was playing for a spot in the semifinals of the 2025 Leagues Cup. Javier Morales, assistant to Javier Mascherano, explained that the decision was made as a precaution:
“Today Javier spoke with Leo and, as he wasn't feeling his best, we decided not to take any risks and to focus on his recovery,” Morales said at a press conference.
The Argentine star had suffered a hamstring injury to his right leg on August 2 during the match against Necaxa, which forced him to leave the field after just 11 minutes. Although he returned to action last weekend against the Los Angeles Galaxy, coming on at halftime and contributing a goal and an assist, the coaching staff believes he is not yet 100 percent.
Limited workouts and special care
According to Morales, Messi only did recovery work on Monday and did not participate in Tuesday's training session. As a result, the coaching staff decided that it was safest not to risk him in a demanding match like the one against Tigres.
Jordi Alba also had to limp off during the match due to a knock to the knee, although no official medical report has yet been issued.
Even though he was unable to play, the Argentine world champion was spotted enjoying the match that would qualify Inter Miami for the Leagues Cup semifinals.
Messi's return will depend on how his recovery progresses, although everything points to him being able to return to the pitch for the team's upcoming matches, always under the supervision of the medical staff to avoid any setbacks.
Despite missing several games due to injuries and commitments with the Argentine national team, Leo Messi has played in 18 of Inter Miami's 23 games. With 18 goals and 9 assists, he remains the team's offensive leader.
