Keylor Navas Arrives in Mexico to Sign With Pumas
The Costa Rican legend landed in Mexico City to join the university team and is expected to make his Liga MX debut soon.
Keylor Navas, widely regarded as the greatest goalkeeper in CONCACAF history, arrived this Tuesday in Mexico City to undergo medical tests and finalize his move to Pumas UNAM, where he will play the remainder of the Apertura 2025 tournament.
At 38 years old, the former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain star still possesses quick reflexes, top-level experience, and the drive to perform at the highest level. He aims to secure his spot as the starting goalkeeper for Costa Rica ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
A high-profile addition for Pumas
Coming from Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina, Navas joins Pumas at a crucial moment. The team currently sits at the bottom of the standings with six goals conceded in just two matches. His arrival is seen as a solution to their defensive struggles and a boost to their morale.
Fans wearing Pumas jerseys welcomed the Costa Rican icon at the airport. With three UEFA Champions League titles to his name from his time with Real Madrid, and having led Costa Rica to the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Navas brings a wealth of experience to the Mexican side.
He is expected to make his debut as early as this Friday against Querétaro, who are also winless with two losses in their opening games.
Liga MX attracts more international stars
Navas joins a wave of elite players entering Liga MX this year. Among them are Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, 2010 World Cup winner and now with Monterrey, as well as 2022 World Cup champion Ángel Correa, who signed with Tigres UANL.
