Jürgen Klopp Breaks His Silence: Will He Return to Coaching?
Former Liverpool manager and current Red Bull Football Director, Jürgen Klopp, has spoken in detail for the first time about his life after leaving the touchline in 2024, admitting he does not miss coaching, though he hasn’t completely ruled out a comeback in the future.
Did Klopp Rule Out a Return?
In an interview with The Athletic, the German coach was candid:
“What I think is not to return, but you never know. I am 58 years old; if I came back at 65 everyone would say I once said I would never return. I would tell them I said that because I believed it 100% at the time. But honestly, I don’t feel I am missing out on anything by not coaching.”
Klopp revealed that since leaving Liverpool, he has lost track of when games even kick off, instead dedicating his days to working out, enjoying family life, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Reflecting on His Time at Liverpool
Klopp stepped down in 2024 after nine years at Anfield, a spell in which he lifted every possible trophy, including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Still, he acknowledged the bitter taste of defeats in Europe’s biggest competition:
“I lost more Champions League finals —two with Liverpool and one with Borussia Dortmund— than most people. I know what it feels like to lose, and that life goes on.”
Klopp’s Take on the Modern Football Calendar
The ex-manager also used the interview to criticize the growing demands of today’s football schedule:
“There is no rest for the best players in the world. FIFA forgets about them; nobody thinks about their well-being.”
For Klopp, the relentless rhythm of elite football is unsustainable, with too many matches and too little concern for player health.
