Guillermo Ochoa brings an historic 22-year career to an end

Guillermo Ochoa announced his retirement from professional soccer at the age of 41, bringing an end to a 22-year career defined by his time with the Mexican National Team, his World Cup performances and an extensive journey through several European leagues.

The goalkeeper confirmed his decision in a social media post, where he expressed his pride in everything he achieved and thanked those who accompanied him throughout his career.

A final moment with Mexico

The goalkeeper played the closing minutes of Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Czechia at Estadio Azteca, the same venue where he began his professional career with Club América in 2004.

Ochoa came on for the final 12 minutes of the match and was greeted with a standing ovation, on a night that ultimately became his final appearance in a Mexican National Team jersey.

His participation in the tournament allowed him to feature at a World Cup for the sixth time, after being included in the squads for Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, Qatar 2022 and the 2026 tournament held in Mexico, the United States and Canada.

A career that crossed Europe

Ochoa made his professional debut with Club América in February 2004 and quickly established himself as one of the most prominent goalkeepers in Liga MX.

In 2011, he began his international journey by joining French club Ajaccio, becoming the first Mexican-born goalkeeper to play professionally in Europe.

He later played for Málaga and Granada in Spain, Standard Liège in Belgium, Salernitana in Italy, AVS Futebol in Portugal and AEL Limassol in Cyprus.

He also returned to América in 2019, beginning a second spell with the club where he had taken his first steps as a professional.

The end of an era for Mexico

For more than two decades, Guillermo Ochoa remained one of the leading figures in Mexican soccer.

His saves, leadership and performances on some of the biggest stages in the world made him a recognizable figure both in Mexico and abroad.

His retirement closes a career that began at Estadio Azteca and also featured one of its final moments there, surrounded by Mexican supporters and once again defending the colors of El Tri.

After 22 years, six World Cups and a long international career, Guillermo Ochoa leaves the game as one of the most important goalkeepers in Mexican soccer history.
