The Ecuadorian winger has rejoined Flamengo after his move to Dynamo Moscow collapsed and is back in the club's plans for the decisive stage of the Copa Libertadores.
The situation changed dramatically in a matter of days. Plata had traveled to Russia after Flamengo authorized him to undergo medical examinations and complete his move to Dynamo Moscow. However, the Russian club decided not to proceed with the transfer after the tests.
Flamengo subsequently confirmed that the deal would not be completed and that the 25-year-old would return to the club.
Why did Plata's move to Dynamo Moscow collapse?
According to Flamengo's official account of the situation, Dynamo informed the Brazilian club that Plata had not met its medical parameters.
The decision generated considerable frustration at Flamengo. The Brazilian club publicly defended the player's physical condition and criticized Dynamo's handling of the operation.
Reports in Brazil indicated that the transfer was worth around €12 million. Plata had recently dealt with tendinitis in his right knee, but Flamengo insisted that he was fit to compete at the highest level.
After several days of uncertainty surrounding his future, the winger publicly reaffirmed his commitment to the club. Plata said he was fully focused on Flamengo, his teammates and the objectives ahead.
Plata returns for the Copa Libertadores
Plata has now joined the Flamengo squad in Belém and resumed training with his teammates.
More importantly, his return means he is once again available for Flamengo's Libertadores campaign. The Ecuadorian is expected to be considered for the trip to his home country as the Brazilian side prepares to face Independiente del Valle in the quarter-finals.
His physical condition will be assessed by Leonardo Jardim and his coaching staff before determining his involvement, but the failed transfer has reopened a possibility that appeared closed only days earlier: Plata playing a role in Flamengo's pursuit of another continental title.
His return also creates a squad-management issue. Flamengo currently have ten foreign players, while Brazilian league rules allow only nine to be included in a matchday squad.
For Plata, however, the immediate picture is now clear. His move to Russia fell through, he has returned to Flamengo and the Libertadores is once again part of his season.
