Flamengo Aims to Become the “Real Madrid of the Americas”
Flamengo, one of Brazil’s most historic and popular clubs, has taken a major step toward its ambition of becoming the undisputed football powerhouse of South America. Club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista confirmed that the Rio de Janeiro side is looking to model itself after Real Madrid — not only in terms of sporting success but also in financial strength.
Flamengo Signs Record-Breaking Sponsorship Deal
The club announced the largest sponsorship contract in the history of Brazilian football after reaching an agreement with betting company Betano. The deal is worth 268 million reais annually (approximately $50 million) and runs until 2028.
This sponsorship covers all of Flamengo’s sports divisions and opens the possibility of arranging friendlies with other Betano-backed clubs, including River Plate, Bayern Munich, Porto, and Aston Villa.
What Flamengo Wants to Achieve
Speaking to the club’s official television channel, Baptista was clear about his vision:
“We want to be the Real Madrid of the Americas.”
He admitted that while financial realities differ between Europe and South America, Flamengo is taking firm steps to consolidate itself as the most powerful team in the region, both on and off the pitch.
The deal more than doubles the income the team previously earned from their former sponsor Pixbet, allowing greater investments in infrastructure, squad depth, and long-term development.

Context: Flamengo’s Weight in Brazilian Football
Founded in 1895, Flamengo boasts the largest fanbase in Brazil and a trophy cabinet that includes three Copa Libertadores titles (1981, 2019, 2022), the 1981 Intercontinental Cup, and multiple national championships.
Currently led by head coach Filipe Luís, former defender of Atlético de Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña, Flamengo has reinforced its squad with recent signings such as Spaniards Samu Lino and Saúl Ñíguez. These moves underline the club’s ambition to dominate South America just as Real Madrid has done in Europe.
