Fans Throw Pyrotechnics in Bolivia: Player Ends up Injured
The match between The Strongest and Blooming, held at Hernando Siles Stadium in La Paz, was overshadowed by a serious incident when fans from the UltraSur supporter group threw fireworks onto the pitch, injuring Paraguayan forward Juan Godoy. The game, which ended 3-2 in favor of the home team, was marked by tense moments in the final minutes after Godoy’s decisive goal.
Impact and consequences of pyrotechnics on the field
During stoppage time, with The Strongest having already come from behind despite playing with one player less, firecrackers and flares were launched from the stands occupied by the UltraSur barra brava. One of these devices, known as a “llorona” for its erratic movement, directly hit Godoy’s leg as he was helping to remove opposing players from the danger zone.
The forward fell to the ground clutching his thigh and was immediately attended to by the club’s medical staff. It was later confirmed that he suffered a first-degree burn on his right thigh and a testicular hematoma, injuries that require ongoing observation. The seriousness of the incident prompted the club’s management, along with Godoy, to file a formal complaint with the Special Force to Fight Crime (FELCC) to identify and punish those responsible.
Following the incident, the police arrested three individuals linked to the pyrotechnic throws, while officers present reported being assaulted by members of the barra. In response, the UltraSur group issued a public apology via social media, stating that causing harm was never their intention and pledging to no longer use fireworks at future matches.
Institutional measures and reaction
The president of The Strongest, Daniel Terrazas, condemned the event as an “act of vandalism” and announced that sanctions would be imposed, including expulsion of those involved and cancellation of nearly 400 free tickets previously granted to these fans—a policy that will be permanently revoked.
Players such as Argentine defender Martín Chiatti, also part of The Strongest squad, described the dangerous situation on the pitch, with numerous fireworks flying uncontrollably, causing panic and forcing the temporary suspension of the game.
The club, which leads the Bolivian Professional Division with 37 points after 16 matches, is also facing institutional challenges, including accusations from former coaches and administrative problems that have put its operations at risk.
Meanwhile, the health of Juan Godoy remains a priority, and his recovery will be crucial for him to continue contributing to the team’s campaign as they maintain hopes of competing for the title despite off-field difficulties.
