David Silva Returns to Professional Football at 40

  • David Silva will put his boots back on more than three years after announcing his retirement. The legendary Spanish midfielder will play for Supreme Sha Tin in Hong Kong, following a path that Ronaldinho also took earlier this year.

David Silva Stuns With His Return to Football

It appeared that David Silva's career had definitively come to an end in 2023. A serious knee injury suffered during preseason with Real Sociedad led the Spaniard to announce his retirement while he was still under contract with the San Sebastián club.

Three years later, El Chino is back.

Supreme Sha Tin officially confirmed the signing of the 40-year-old World Cup winner, who passed his medical examinations before completing his move to the Hong Kong Premier League club. The short-term agreement marks Silva's return to professional football after more than three years without playing an official match.

“I am very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin for this experience,” Silva said in the video confirming his return. The Spaniard also expressed his excitement about discovering Hong Kong, experiencing its culture, and beginning this new chapter.

An Injury Forced El Chino to Retire in 2023

Silva's farewell did not come because he had decided it was simply time to end his career.

The midfielder suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament while preparing for the 2023-24 season with Real Sociedad. The severity of the injury ultimately accelerated a decision that likely would have come later.

He will now have to gradually rebuild his fitness before returning to competition. Supreme Sha Tin announced that the Spaniard will travel to Hong Kong to join training and begin preparing for his comeback.

His debut could come on October 18 against Hong Kong FC, although that will depend on his physical condition.

A Career That Made Him a Manchester City Legend

The comeback brings back one of the most important Spanish footballers of his generation.

Silva spent 10 seasons with Manchester City, making 436 appearances and scoring 77 goals before leaving in 2020. During his time in England, he won four Premier League titles and became a fundamental figure in the club's transformation into a powerhouse of English football.

His story with Spain was even more special. The midfielder earned 125 caps for the national team and was part of an unforgettable generation that won Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2012.

After leaving Manchester, he returned to Spain to play for Real Sociedad, where he won the Copa del Rey before injury brought his career to an early end.

Or at least, that was how it seemed.

Ronaldinho Also Decided to Return This Year

Silva is not the only legend who decided to come out of retirement in 2026.

In June, Ronaldinho stunned the football world by announcing his move to Ravenna, a club competing in Italy's Serie C, at the age of 46. The Brazilian had not played a professional match since 2015, when he represented Fluminense, although he officially announced his retirement in 2018.

The 2002 World Cup winner with Brazil and 2005 Ballon d'Or winner was even registered as a player by the Italian club, although he later acknowledged that his involvement on the pitch would depend on the coach and the team's needs.

Now it is David Silva's turn to write another unexpected chapter.

He has nothing left to prove after everything he achieved with Manchester City, Real Sociedad, and Spain. His new challenge will be completely different: rediscovering his rhythm after three years away from competition and enjoying football once again at the age of 40.
