Cristiano Ronaldo’s Sister Talks of “Betrayal” Within Portugal’s National Team
Elma Aveiro has hardened the stance surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Portugal, making a reconciliation with Jorge Jesus appear increasingly difficult.
The crisis surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portugal national team shows no sign of fading. After the forward left camp during the UEFA Nations League, his sister Elma Aveiro broke her silence with a comment that makes an immediate reconciliation look even more difficult.
“When you are betrayed, it is difficult to come back,” Elma said when asked about the possibility of Cristiano wearing the Portugal shirt again. Her comments were aimed directly at the dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus, whom the player criticized following the events during the international camp.
Cristiano left before the match against Denmark after claiming that the coach had broken a promise by not bringing him on in Oslo despite having him warm up for around half an hour. According to the forward’s version of events, the situation also ended in an aggressive exchange with the coach.
The federation is trying to prevent a permanent split
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is considering different ways to ease the tension and potentially pave the way for the national team’s all-time leading scorer to return. The problem is that the signals coming from the player’s family point in the opposite direction.
Elma made her comments during a book presentation in Lisbon, an event also attended by Jorge Jesus. Their presence at the same event did not lead to any public rapprochement. While Ronaldo’s sister expressed her disappointment with the way Cristiano had been treated, the coach chose not to respond.
The latest comments suggest that the dispute is no longer simply about whether Cristiano received enough playing time. It has become a question of trust, and that could prove much harder for the federation to repair.

Dolores Aveiro also speaks of her pain
Elma’s comments follow those of Dolores Aveiro, Cristiano’s mother, who also expressed her sadness over the way her son left the national team camp.
Speaking to Portuguese television outlet TV 7 Dias, Dolores said she was shocked to see her son leave in those circumstances after so many years representing Portugal. She also revealed that she spoke with him immediately after the incident and that Cristiano asked her to remain calm until he could explain everything to the family in person.
His family had tried to urge him to keep his composure, but emotions ultimately took over in a dispute that has already divided opinion around the national team. Each new comment from Ronaldo’s inner circle now appears to push a quick resolution further away.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal future remains uncertain
The FPF is still trying to find a way forward, but its room for maneuver appears to be shrinking. Cristiano is 41, and his history with Portugal is among the most significant in international soccer, meaning a permanent split would carry enormous sporting and symbolic weight.
The central question is whether the player and coach can rebuild a relationship that, according to those close to Cristiano, has been badly damaged. Jorge Jesus has not publicly responded to the latest accusations, while Ronaldo’s family continues to make its frustration clear.
There has been no definitive decision on the forward’s international future. But after Elma Aveiro’s comments, the issue no longer appears to be simply whether Cristiano will be called up again — trust may have to be restored first.
