Could Cristiano Miss the Start of the World Cup? His Red Card Against Ireland Sends Portugal Into Panic
The Portugal national team is facing tense hours after their 2–0 loss to Ireland, a setback that not only postpones their direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup but also raises an unexpected and alarming scenario: Cristiano Ronaldo could miss the start of the tournament due to his red card for violent conduct.
The forward, aiming to play in his sixth World Cup, was shown a straight red in the 61st minute after an elbow inside the box, a play reviewed by VAR that could result in a suspension of more than two matches.
Portugal were supposed to secure their ticket in Dublin, but defensive errors and a lack of finishing condemned Roberto Martínez’s side, who must now beat Armenia —already eliminated— to avoid complications.
A Red Card That Could Carry World Cup Consequences
Portugal’s biggest blow wasn’t just the defeat, but the disciplinary situation involving their captain. Cristiano was initially shown a yellow card, but Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg upgraded it to a straight red after checking the monitor.
FIFA regulations state that suspensions for violent conduct not served during qualifiers are automatically transferred to the World Cup finals.
This means that if Cristiano receives a two-match (or longer) ban, he would be forced to serve it in the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Portugal could face a case similar to Nicolás Otamendi, who was sent off on the final matchday of South American qualifying and will serve his one-match ban in Argentina’s World Cup opener.
Ireland Punish Portugal’s Mistakes and Delay Their Qualification
Heimir Hallgrímsson’s team was superior in both boxes and ruthless with their chances. Troy Parrott scored a brace that stunned the Aviva Stadium: first in the 17th minute after a poorly defended corner, and again just before halftime with a near-post strike.
Despite Portugal’s 27 shots, only five were on target, reflecting their desperation against a disciplined and efficient opponent.

Ireland now sit on 7 points, out of the race for direct qualification but still alive in the playoff chase. Portugal remain top with 10 points, but now must finish the phase perfectly.
What Does Portugal Need Now?
A win —and even a draw— against Armenia should secure Portugal’s direct ticket. But all attention is on Cristiano’s suspension. If the ban exceeds one match, the forward would miss not only the “final” group showdown but also Portugal’s World Cup opener.
The ball is now in the hands of the Disciplinary Committee. And Portugal holds its breath at a scenario once unthinkable: a World Cup potentially starting without Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch.
