Benfica Wants to Secure Mourinho and Complicates His Arrival at Real Madrid
Benfica wants to keep the Special One at all costs after the interest from several clubs in acquiring his experience
The Mourinho saga continues
José Mourinho, with his strength and experience, is emerging as one of the potential candidates to become Real Madrid's next manager. However, his current club, Benfica, does not share this view and, according to the Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, plans to present him with a contract extension offer: his current contract expires in 2027, and the Portuguese club intends to extend it until 2028 or 2029.
The meeting between Rui Costa and Mourinho
The same Portuguese outlet adds that this week, a meeting took place between Rui Costa, Benfica's president, and Mourinho, with the aim of planning for the upcoming season. This move, in addition to the formal extension offer, complicates Real Madrid's ambitions: Benfica's offer puts pressure on any club interested in signing the manager
The buyout clause
Mourinho's contract includes a clause that allows him to leave for approximately 3,5 million within ten days of the end of the season. After that period, the clause expires, and any team wishing to secure his services will have to negotiate directly with Benfica, which will demand a fee in excess of that 3,5 million to release the coach.

What does the future hold?
Against this backdrop, Real Madrid is faced with the need to expedite its decision on whether or not Mourinho will be its next head coach. In the meantime, Mourinho himself will meet with the media today ahead of Benfica's match against Famalicão; an appearance during which his future will undoubtedly be one of the main topics of discussion.
The combination of the renewal offer, the meeting between the president and the coach, and the validity of the release clause creates a tense situation with tight deadlines for interested clubs. In the coming days, the parties are expected to make their moves, and the coach's public statements are anticipated to provide more clues about the direction his career will take.
