Belgium Appeals Against the Annulment of Balogun’s Sanction in the FIFA World Cup 2026
The RBFA would have appealed FIFA's decision regarding the sanction on Balogun, hours before the round of 16 match against the USA in Seattle
Appeal by Belgium
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) opened an appeal process against FIFA on Monday, in a move that shook the lead-up to the World Cup. The objective is clear, to overturn the suspension of the red card penalty for American forward Folarin Balogun, whose participation in the round of 16 match between Belgium and the United States has become the center of controversy.
Belgium's complaint
According to reports from Belgian national media such as Le Soir, La Libre, and RTL, the Belgian federation had sent a letter to the highest body of world football, which was interpreted as a formal request for an appeal. FIFA, in response, appointed a member of its appeals committee to make an urgent decision, with a deadline set for 2:00 PM local time in Brussels.

The implications
The decision, which is awaited with tension, arrives just hours before the scheduled match in Seattle, at 2:00 AM Belgian time. The situation places both teams in a scenario of uncertainty, as Balogun's presence could alter the balance of a matchup that promises to be vibrant.
The RBFA had anticipated on Sunday that it was "studying all possible options" to defend what it considers the fundamental principles of fair play. With this appeal, Belgium seeks to set a precedent in the application of disciplinary sanctions, arguing that the annulment of the red card to the American attacker directly affects competitive fairness.
