The search for the next head coach of the Italy National Team has taken another unexpected turn. Just when Andrea Pirlo appeared to be one of the leading candidates to take charge of the project led by Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, an issue away from the pitch has emerged as a significant obstacle to his appointment.

The former Italian midfielder is under scrutiny because of his commercial partnership with Fonbet, a Russian sportsbook for which he has served as a global ambassador since 2025. Given the current international landscape, that relationship has raised concerns within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), which wants to avoid any controversy that could damage the image of the new Azzurri project.

The Issue Goes Beyond the Sponsorship

The debate is not simply about Andrea Pirlo endorsing a betting company.

The primary concern is that Fonbet is a Russian company at a time when Russia remains suspended from international competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA, while also being the country currently subject to the largest number of international sanctions.

Because of that, officials within the FIGC are carefully evaluating the institutional impact of appointing a national team coach who maintains a commercial relationship with a company linked to the Russian market.

Although the agreement is a private business arrangement, the Federation wants to avoid any political or reputational controversy before making a final decision.

The Moscow Appearance Added to the Debate

The controversy intensified just a few weeks ago.

Andrea Pirlo and Marco Materazzi took part in a promotional event organized by Fonbet at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, one of Russia's most iconic sporting venues.

Both former World Cup winners emphasized that their participation was strictly related to sports and commercial commitments, not politics.

Nevertheless, images from the event once again placed Pirlo at the center of public discussion just as he was emerging as the leading candidate to coach the Italy National Team.

There Is Still a Way to Complete the Deal

Despite the controversy, Pirlo's candidacy has not been ruled out.

According to reports from Italy, the former midfielder's legal team insists that his agreement with Fonbet is tied to his role as head coach of United FC in the United Arab Emirates.

That would allow him to terminate the sponsorship agreement unilaterally without paying any financial penalty if he ultimately accepts the position with the Azzurri.

Even so, the FIGC wants to review every legal detail before making a final decision.

Maldini and Leonardo Continue Their Search

The Italian Football Federation remains committed to building an ambitious project aimed at restoring the four-time World Cup champions to the top level of international football.

After failing to qualify for the last three FIFA World Cups, the appointments of Paolo Maldini and Leonardo to oversee the sporting project marked the beginning of a major rebuilding process.

Pep Guardiola, the Federation's dream candidate, has already turned down the offer to coach Italy.

In that context, Andrea Pirlo emerged as the ideal choice because of his deep connection with the Italy National Team and his alignment with the vision of the new sporting leadership.

However, his commercial relationship with Fonbet has slowed the process and forced the FIGC to carefully evaluate every scenario before making its final decision.

If the move ultimately falls through, Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte remain the leading alternatives to take over the Azzurri and guide them back to the top of world football.
