Alarm Bells Ring for Atlético de Madrid as Jan Oblak Is Ruled Out Against Sweden
Concern has spread across both Atlético de Madrid and the Slovenian national team.
Jan Oblak, Slovenia’s captain and Atlético’s untouchable presence in goal, has been ruled out of Tuesday’s match against Sweden after his physical discomfort worsened following the game against Kosovo.
The Slovenian FA confirmed the news on Sunday, also announcing Martin Turk as his immediate replacement. Beyond the sporting blow, Oblak’s absence raises serious questions about his fitness just days before Atlético resumes action in LaLiga.
A Sudden Setback for Slovenia
Oblak played all 90 minutes against Kosovo, a match in which Slovenia was mathematically eliminated from the race toward the 2026 World Cup. But after the final whistle, his situation took a worrying turn.
“The injury has worsened. I think someone else will be in goal in Stockholm, but I hope it’s nothing serious and that Jan can return soon. His role is enormous for this team,” said head coach Matjaž Kek, underlining the emotional and sporting impact of losing his captain.
Atlético Closely Monitoring His Condition
With his absence confirmed for the trip to Sweden, Oblak will return to Madrid to begin treatment and undergo further evaluation. His availability for next Sunday’s match against Getafe at the Coliseum is now in doubt.
Oblak has been irreplaceable for Atlético de Madrid for years, and any physical issue involving him is more than a scare — it’s a structural concern. With Atlético battling near the top of the table, losing a figure of his stature threatens both stability and momentum.
The club will monitor his recovery day by day, though inside the Metropolitano there is hope that the injury won’t extend beyond expectations. Oblak’s value is not defined only by his saves; it’s defined by leadership, security and authority. And for now, all of that is on standby.
