(VIDEO) Diogo Jota's Wife Attends Emotional Tribute During the Supertaça Between Benfica and Sporting
Benfica were crowned Supertaça de Portugal champions after edging out eternal rivals Sporting CP in a hard-fought clash at the Estádio do Algarve. But beyond the result, the night was marked by a deeply emotional tribute in memory of the late footballer Diogo Jota and his brother.
A Heartfelt Tribute
Moments before kickoff, the stadium paused for a moving tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away alongside his brother in a car accident on July 3rd in Zamora, Spain. A short but powerful ceremony featured images of the player and his family on the stadium screens, culminating in a round of heartfelt applause from the crowd.

The late striker's wife, Rute Cardoso, was present in the VIP box, accompanied by prominent figures of Portuguese football such as Rui Costa. Her presence was a symbol of strength and the deep affection still felt for Jota, only a month after their wedding. Cardoso, who has shared emotional messages on social media since the tragedy, was a central figure in the tribute that moved both fans and players alike.
Pavlidis Seals the Lisbon Derby
On the pitch, the decisive moment came from Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who netted the only goal of the match in the 50th minute after a crucial mistake by Rui Silva, former Betis goalkeeper, who mishandled a seemingly harmless shot.
Up to that point, Sporting had dominated the game, largely driven by an impressive performance from Spanish full-back Iván Fresneda, formerly of Real Valladolid. But the goal shifted momentum, allowing Benfica, with Richard Ríos controlling the midfield, to dictate the tempo.
In a bid to equalize, manager Rúben Amorim introduced new signing Luis Suárez, fresh from Almería. The Colombian forward showed glimpses of danger on his debut, but couldn’t find a way past the resolute Benfica defense.
With this victory, Benfica celebrate their tenth Supertaça, reaffirming their status as one of Portugal's football powerhouses. For Sporting, the night was about more than the scoreline—a shared moment of remembrance brought together an entire football community.
