This was Gago's debut with Boca.
Fernando Gago did not have the best debut in his return to Argentina as head coach of Boca Juniors. In his first match against Tigre, the Xeneize side suffered a painful 3-0 defeat, putting an end to hopes of a triumphant start for the former Racing and Chivas manager.
The match started on the wrong foot for Boca in the first half. At the 28th minute, Nehuén Paz took advantage of a rebound inside the box after a corner kick to score Tigre’s first goal. Boca’s goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, was left with no chance to react as the disorganized defense allowed the opening goal.
In the second half, Gago tried to change the course of the game by making some adjustments to his lineup. Despite some improvements, Boca’s attack could not break Tigre’s defense, largely thanks to the standout performance of goalkeeper Felipe Tomás Zenobio, who denied a clear chance from Edinson Cavani in the 68th minute.
Tigre struck again in the final minutes. In the 85th minute, Agustín Cardozo capitalized on another corner to score the second goal. Finally, in the closing moments, Sebastián Medina sealed the 3-0 win after a pass from Lorenzo Scipioni, leaving Boca and Gago with no answer.
This result marks a tough start for Gago, who has also faced challenging debuts at clubs like Aldosivi, Racing, and Chivas. Boca Juniors is currently in 14th place in the Argentine league with 24 points, and their next challenge will be against Deportivo Riestra at La Bombonera, where Gago will look to turn things around.
