Pep Guardiola Dreams of Coaching a National Team at a World Cup: Goodbye Manchester City?
Throughout this season, the future of Pep Guardiola has been one of the most talked-about topics in the football world. Although his contract with Manchester City ends on June 30, 2027, the Spanish coach has kept everyone guessing, avoiding confirmation of his next move. However, in a recent interview with Reuters, Guardiola revealed that his ambitions go beyond club football and that he dreams of leading a national team in a major international tournament.
Guardiola’s Big Dream: Coaching at a World Cup
For some time, the English Football Association showed interest in hiring Guardiola as the national team coach after Gareth Southgate resigned following Euro 2024. The plan was for Pep to lead the Three Lions at the 2026 World Cup. They were even willing to wait patiently while appointing an interim manager. However, the Catalan chose to continue his project at the Etihad Stadium, aiming to redeem himself after a challenging season.

Guardiola himself explained: “I want to prove to myself that I can do it. I don’t want to repeat the feeling I had last year. When you win, it tastes better and you sleep better. I don’t know any coach who loses matches and sleeps like a baby. That doesn’t happen. You have to worry. It’s part of our life.”
Despite his current commitment, Guardiola made it clear that he sees Manchester City as the last club in his career. At 56 in two years, he still has many opportunities in the international arena. “I would like to participate in a World Cup, a European Championship, or a Copa América,” he stated.
This desire to lead a national team to international success marks a shift in his goals, similar to the path taken by Carlo Ancelotti, who waited until he was 65 to take charge of Brazil. However, Guardiola does not intend to wait that long and is open to any opportunities that may arise.
A Legacy Beyond Club Football
For now, the Spanish coach is preparing to compete in another World Cup, but this time for clubs. Manchester City will participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled from June 14 to July 13, as the reigning champions.
Meanwhile, speculation grows about the direction Guardiola’s career will take and whether he will finally make the leap to a major national team. His name remains a top candidate for many international projects seeking a coach with experience, tactical vision, and the ability to handle the pressure of big tournaments.
In short, Pep Guardiola not only aims to keep making his mark in club football but also to write a new chapter as a national team coach, fulfilling one of his greatest dreams: winning a World Cup.
