Nico Williams unexpected move to regain Barcelona attention
For a long time, FC Barcelona board was firm: they didn’t want to hear anything about Nico Williams. The Athletic Club winger had turned down a move to Barça last summer due to doubts over the club financial situation and their issues with Financial Fair Play, which left a sour taste among the Catalan leadership. The message from within the club was clear his chance had passed, and the Barça train doesn’t wait.

Williams wants to wear the Barca shirt
However, this season the situation has shifted. Nico is now open to wearing the Blaugrana shirt, a willingness he has already shared with his Spain national teammates. Barcelona were aware of this change in stance, yet remained cautious until Nico made a decisive move. His agent, Félix Tainta, met with Deco in Barcelona this past Friday to formally convey the player’s interest. It was a gesture that helped ease tensions and placed Williams back among the club potential options.
Still, the number one target remains unchanged: Luis Díaz. The Colombian winger from Liverpool continues to be Barça priority. Díaz is reportedly keen on a move to Barcelona, but the English club is not yet open to offers. Barça believe Liverpool will eventually need to sell to fund their summer plans and are working behind the scenes to at least bring them to the negotiation table.
Many options but the Catalan club is the goal
Should that path become blocked, Deco is already considering alternatives. Now, alongside the names already on his list, Nico Williams is officially in the mix.
The talented winger from Navarre has offers from Bayern Munich and Arsenal, in addition to a strong renewal proposal from Athletic Club. Still, Nico knows that he has been at his best while playing with the national team, alongside close friends like Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Dani Olmo players deeply connected to Barça. That bond has influenced his desire to give the Catalan club another shot. He knows he’s not the first choice, but at least he’s no longer ruled out.
Now, Nico hopes to convince Barça top brass that he can be a valuable asset for the club new project. Only time will tell whether he’ll wear the Blaugrana or end up finding a new home elsewhere.
