Luis de la Fuente: "I Feel Ashamed of Those Boos Aimed at Morata"
Álvaro Morata was booed by the Santiago Bernabéu crowd in the friendly between Spain and Brazil. The coach's response was resolute.
Luis de la Fuente, the Spanish national team coach, responded strongly to the Spanish fans who booed captain Álvaro Morata at the Santiago Bernabéu, admitting that he felt "embarrassed".
"It hurts me deeply that in my country, they boo a player of the national team and the captain, who is a role model, an example. I feel ashamed of those jeers," he said in a press conference.
"It's been a minority that sometimes insults someone or stands out. The rest of the stadium has had fantastic behavior, but as a Spaniard, I feel ashamed when someone boos a player who defends the colors of our country, even though the majority has supported Spain," he added.
De la Fuente called for fans to forget about their clubs when the national team plays and support all the players.
"We should engage in self-criticism, support for the national team. Wherever we go, we are received fantastically, but there can always be someone clumsy who messes up. It must be our job to educate people and leave club colors aside here. It's everyone's job; this is the Spanish national team, and the players represent Spain. We must push to educate that minority," he concluded.
