Leo Beenhakker, affectionately known as "Don Leo," passed away this Thursday at the age of 82, leaving behind a distinguished career filled with success in both Europe and the Americas. Born in Rotterdam in 1942, Beenhakker began his managerial career in the Netherlands and quickly established himself as one of the most respected coaches of his time.
He led Ajax to an Eredivisie title in the 1979–80 season and also coached Feyenoord, strengthening his reputation in Dutch football. However, it was in Spain where he reached the pinnacle of his career, managing Real Madrid between 1986 and 1989. Under his leadership, the club won three consecutive LaLiga titles, as well as a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa de España. His attacking philosophy and ability to manage star-studded squads earned him lasting admiration at the Santiago Bernabéu.
He returned briefly to Real Madrid in 1992 for a second stint that, while shorter, confirmed the esteem in which he was held by the club.

Beenhakker also made a strong impact on the international stage. He coached the Netherlands at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and later guided Poland to its first-ever European Championship appearance in 2008. He also enjoyed notable spells in Mexican football, managing both Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara, showcasing his deep love for the game no matter the league or region. A pioneer of tactics and player development, Beenhakker was widely regarded as a mentor figure to many in the sport.
His death marks a significant loss for global football, but his legacy remains vibrant in the trophies he won, the ideas he taught, and the respect he earned from fellow coaches, players, and fans. Leo Beenhakker wasn’t just a great manager—he was a true master of the game.
