Barcelona star Lamine Yamal is back in the spotlight as his reported third consecutive Kopa Trophy win sparks mixed reactions and reignites debate over his season.
Lamine Yamal has made football history once again. The FC Barcelona forward has won his third Kopa Trophy at the 2026 Ballon d’Or awards, becoming the first player ever to claim the honor three times.
The Spanish star beat nominees including Pau Cubarsí, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lennart Karl, Yan Diomande, and Eli Junior Kroupi, among others. Yamal entered the ceremony as the favorite in polls, backed by his impressive performances over the past few seasons. Before the 2026 edition, he had already secured back-to-back Kopa Trophy wins in 2024 and 2025.
AN AWARD THAT SPARKS CONTROVERSY
Lamine Yamal’s third Kopa Trophy has not come without controversy. Although his talent and ability to make a difference keep him among football’s brightest young prospects, his recent performances have sparked debate over whether he deserved to win the award again. Despite winning the 2026 World Cup, his performances at the tournament reportedly fell short of expectations, while his form with Barcelona has shown signs of inconsistency. These factors have fueled doubts among fans and analysts.
In this context, the award could also be viewed as a kind of consolation prize for the Barcelona forward, whose individual ambitions extend to winning more prestigious honors. Nevertheless, his third Kopa Trophy would further cement his status as one of the leading figures of a generation determined to leave its mark on European football.
