Could Cristiano Ronaldo Play the Club World Cup with Real Madrid?
The story between Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid might not be over just yet. With the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup approaching — set to take place in the United States between June and July — speculation is growing in Europe about a possible short-term return of the club’s all-time top scorer.
The tournament’s new format, featuring 32 teams and flexible squad registration rules, could open the door for Ronaldo to wear the white jersey one last time.
How Could His Return Happen?
According to Real Madrid Confidencial, FIFA regulations for the expanded Club World Cup will allow clubs to register up to six players on short-term contracts. This clause enables teams to sign players specifically for the competition, even without long-term deals in place.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with Al-Nassr is set to expire in June 2025, just before the tournament begins. If he does not renew, he would be eligible to join any qualified club — including Real Madrid — on a temporary basis.
Is It Realistically Possible?
There has been no official statement from Real Madrid, and no concrete reports of contact between the club and Ronaldo’s camp. However, the idea of a short comeback isn't out of the question.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer with 450 goals in 438 games. He previously won three Club World Cups with the Spanish giants (2014, 2016, 2017). A symbolic return could offer an emotional farewell and a marketing boost, especially with the tournament taking place in a major commercial market like the U.S.
Other Clubs Are Interested Too
In addition to Real Madrid, clubs like Chelsea, Palmeiras, and Al Hilal — one of Al-Nassr’s biggest rivals — have shown interest, according to Diez and El Diario.
However, Ronaldo has reportedly rejected a formal offer from Al Hilal, out of respect for his current club. His future remains undecided, but a final decision is expected in the coming weeks.
Could a final dance in white be on the horizon for CR7 at the Club World Cup 2025? Time will tell — but the possibility is certainly on the table.
