Benfica vs Sporting, the great final off the Taça de Portugal: the farewell for Ángel Di María and Viktor Gyökeres
This Sunday’s Taça de Portugal final could be the perfect ending to an incredible season for Sporting CP, who are chasing the domestic double after clinching the Primeira Liga title. When Rúben Amorim walked away on November 11, the team had a brief wobble, but with Rui Borges stepping in, they quickly found their rhythm and sealed the league last weekend. Now, they’re aiming to wrap things up by lifting a cup they haven’t won since 2019.
The final could also be the goodbye moment for Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, who’s been on fire this season with 39 goals in the league and 4 more in the cup. His form has attracted attention from top European clubs, and Arsenal seem to be leading the race for his signature.
Benfica looking to save their season
On the other side, Benfica are desperate to end the season on a high after once again falling short in the league to their biggest rivals. This will also be the last game for Ángel Di María, who’s wrapping up his second spell with the club. Benfica haven’t lifted the Taça de Portugal since 2017, and winning it now would at least soften the blow of a frustrating campaign.
The two teams faced off not long ago in a tense 1–1 draw, a result that all but handed the league to Sporting. Now, the Lisbon derby is back with a trophy on the line—and way more than just bragging rights.
Meanwhile, over in England, Rúben Amorim is under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. After leaving Sporting CP to take over Manchester United, his time in the Premier League has been a disaster. The team barely avoided relegation and won’t be playing any European football next season. His final match in charge, against Aston Villa on Sunday, might also be his last at Old Trafford.
The Taça de Portugal final will be played at the Estádio Nacional and you can catch it live on beIN SPORTS this Sunday at 11:50 a.m. ET.
