Barcelona & Manchester United Linked With Emiliano Martínez Move
The Argentine goalkeeper is on Barça’s radar as Szczesny’s future remains uncertain and Ter Stegen recovers.
FC Barcelona continues shaping its squad for next season, and although the initial focus was on strengthening the wings, the goalkeeper position has now taken center stage for Hansi Flick and his coaching staff. With Marc-André ter Stegen still in recovery after a long injury, the club sees the need for a top-level alternative under the posts.
Ter Stegen and Szczesny Create an Opening
The German keeper started the latest match against Villarreal, but his physical condition still raises concerns. Meanwhile, the club is awaiting a final decision from Wojciech Szczesny, who has received a two-year contract extension offer. The Polish keeper, who starred in the recent 4–3 Clásico win, admitted he still needs to discuss his future with his family before committing. His uncertainty has triggered a response from the Barça board.
At the same time, Iñaki Peña is expected to leave. Aware that he’s not considered the primary option for the goalkeeper role, the Spaniard has had offers since the winter transfer window and looks set to move on from Barcelona.
Dibu Emerges as a Top Contender
Amid this backdrop, Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez of Aston Villa has emerged as a strong candidate. At 32 and with a solid resume, the Argentine World Cup winner may be on the verge of departing the English club. His emotional tears following a 2–0 win over Tottenham at Villa Park were interpreted by many as a farewell.
But the road to his signing won’t be easy. Manchester United is also targeting Martínez as a replacement for André Onana, and clubs in Saudi Arabia are reportedly willing to offer lucrative contracts. However, the Argentine’s competitive edge, leadership, and clutch performances for Argentina make him an appealing fit for the Blaugrana.
Sporting director Deco has already made it clear the club won’t settle after this season’s success. If Dibu Martínez ends up in FC Barcelona, he wouldn’t just bolster the goalkeeping unit — he’d signal the club’s determination to stay at the top and challenge for even more.
