Aitana Bonmatí hospitalized for viral meningitis just days before the start of Women's Euro 2025
Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, was rushed to a Madrid hospital after showing symptoms compatible with viral meningitis, less than a week before Spain debut at Women's EURO 2025.
The news was confirmed by the coach of the Spanish national team, Montse Tomé, who explained that Bonmatí began to feel ill during training on Friday morning, presenting fever and general malaise. The player was immediately taken to a medical center, where the diagnosis was confirmed.
“She has authorized me to say that she has viral meningitis,” Tomé told a press conference. "The word is scary, but the medical staff assures me that it is under control. She will remain hospitalized and we don't yet know for how long."
A sensitive loss for Spain
Bonmatí, 27, is a key player in Tomé's scheme. Her talent, vision, dribbling and passing accuracy have been fundamental for both the national team and FC Barcelona, where she has helped them win three Champions League titles and five consecutive finals.
Aitana's loss adds to a recent history of misfortune for Spain in major tournaments. In 2022, Alexia Putellas suffered a serious injury just before the start of the European Championship, and her absence was instrumental in the team's quarter-final exit.
For the friendly against Japan, where Spain won 3-1, Tomé opted to field 18-year-old Vicky López as Bonmatí replacement in midfield. Now, the weight of the team will fall on the likes of Alexia Putellas and Patricia Guijarro, also of Barcelona.
Spain, days away from its debut
The Spanish national team is scheduled to travel to Switzerland this Sunday. Its first match will be on Thursday against Portugal, in the city of Bern. They will also share Group B with Belgium and Italy. Spain starts as favorites, especially after two victories against Portugal in April, including a 7-1 thrashing in the Nations League.
A blow to La Roja morale
Bonmatí absence represents a major blow to Spain's hopes in the continental tournament. His leadership, creativity and control of the pace of play are vital to the team's performance. However, both the coaching staff and her teammates are confident of a speedy recovery.
